Introduction To Multimedia (History of Multimedia)

History of Multimedia

Early Generation (1980)

Most of the personal computer in the early stage of 1980’s can only afford to be use for text. The input was limited to the process of typing using the keyboard and the output was the texts shown on the screen and also the printer. After a while, users had upgraded the PC with new tools for the screen, printer and optional adapter card, which contain additional features. This upgrading process allows the users to draw graphic shapes like lines and circles. However, most screens in that era can only shows two colors (black and green) or four colors only.

Middle Generation (1980)

In the middle of 1980’s, computer seems to be faster and is able to store data excessively with higher storing capacity (HDD). The processor, which made of chip, is known as the microprocessor. This ability leads to the innovation of microcomputer, which mostly used in the office, bank, home and school.
The read access memory (RAM) is faster than before and this enables the users to access data much easier. Besides that, users also manage to apply audio and video digital to their computers.
Furthermore, during this generation, input such as mouse, light pen and touch screen were being used besides the keyboard. This various type of input made computers more attractive and popular amongst the users.
The networking system were also being introduced in this generation whereby a user manage to share their files with another user by using either the local access networking (LAN) or wide access networking (WAN).

Late Generation (1980)

In the end of 1980’s, most computers can only manage to display 16 different colors at a time. Certain computers may not only displaying texts and graphics but also images with limited colors. This limited display is called VGA. Then, upgrading is done using the display card adapter, which allows 256 colors to be displayed at a time, which is known as Super-VGA (SGVA). This allows the users to build a more attractive multimedia project.

Besides that, there is also a card, which allow the users to apply audio digital to the normal computer. This software allows the computer to record and play back the sounds recorded. The sound’s input and output is in the form of analog while computers can only save them in the digital form. The exchange of the form allows the building of a more interactive multimedia projects, which include the texts, images and graphics element.
There are a lot more upgrading process held and this include the ability to read from the CD-ROM store. This software needs the CD-ROM driver at the computer.

Middle Of 1990’s

In this generation, most PC is able to display at least 256 colors and use the audio digital and also the CD-ROM driver. It’s easier for the users to build texts, graphics, images and videos. Besides, there are also another technologies like the ability of performing the digital video. Computers are able to receive the analog video command from the video camera or the VCR, and convert them to the digital form and saving it in the hard disk. This ability leads to the innovation of the VCD player. This software enable displaying recorded images on computers and television and yet it is popular among the society today.
